So, we have a guy who’s putting up an awesome day-to-day write up about the Carrera Panamericana with amazing pictures, amazing scenery, amazing cars.

Hell, he’s the damn copilot/navigator in one of the cars and is providing us with an exclusive look behind the scenes of the race, yet Jalopnik finds it more interesting to put up a post about ANOTHER person that bought ‘insert expensive (unreliable maybe?) car’ for the price of a Toyota Camry.

Seriously, what am I missing here? Why aren’t the LCP posts being covered on the FP?

Also, incoming post about what I did in Japan/pictures/awesomeness in Japan!!!!!!

They seem to be moving away from long form journalism to click bait bullshit. I’m guessing it’s a matter of what drives traffic and ad revenue.

In all fairness, I kind of like his writing... But I also understand what you’re saying. Let’s first see what else he has to offer, I’m sure he has lots of other stuff to write about.

Also where did you go in Japan? Throw all the pics in here, be certain I’ll take a look :)

Why post that when there are articles by Stupid MacTryhard to post? Everyone loves Mad Libs.

Racing are dumb, ‘ironic’ QX70 reviews will be what brings jalopnik back.

I would rather read about the guy who bought a cheap Porsche that may grenade on him than anything race related.

But not everybody feels that way. That’s why variety is a good thing.

Why spend $100 on car parts or read about something neat when you could buy a new jacket, cookware, or headphones on Kinja Deals

I’ve learned a long time ago, you don’t go to sites formerly owned by Gawker Media for content, but for the comments section only.

Which is kinda funny considering that P George’s stated MO as EIC was to do more ‘journalism’ and less “omg check out this windsurfer in a hurricane”

*sips tea*

I’ve got someone on the “Obama knows how to drive stick” article demanding that I tell them my voting history... Don’t go there for the comments either. :/

With that said, I’ll throw them a bone because they’re in a period of transition, and big ships take a while to turn. They hemorrhaged most of their best writers pre-Univision, and it takes time to bring new staff on board and get them up to speed. Long form might be their intent for the future, while the stuff on the FP is currently keeping the lights on.

They need a mix of things... Long form stuff only is not what makes money. You need stuff that gets easily “liked and shared”. They need to do click bait because it’s what makes money... The thing is to be able to keep a certain ratio of long form vs click bait.

And I like simple dumb stuff also. As long as the entire site is not made of that. Up to Patrick to make sure click bait doesn’t take over... And I personally know and understand it’s not what he wants. But working in a multinational company and trying to push your own editorial lines is not always easy :)

Don’t necessarily blame Jalopnik and its staff. Blame those who want their work to make cash and who make them live :)

There are a bit of teh lolz, but at the same time a good portion of depression from the fact that people think that’s really how things are supposed to be. Even worse is that they’re acting like it’s completely unreasonable for me not to disclose my voting history, and they’re questioning why I’m being so secretive about it. Um... I’m not. I just don’t see any reason why some random Kinja user needs to know that information. I originally made a comment that I wasn’t voting for Hillary or Trump, and apparently that means that I have to disclose if I’ve voted before and who I voted for. I really don’t know what point they’re trying to make, nor how they intend to use that information if it’s provided to them.

You could have fun with this. Here are some suggestions:

Tell them you only vote third party. Wake up sheeple!

Tell them you only vote Ross Perot every year. (I did vote for him in a fake election in elementary school. No idea who he was at the time but I liked his name)

Mix up the names like Ronald Obama or Teddy Bush.

Say “I’ve been voting trump since he was a democrat”

I actually did vote 3rd party the last election and indent to this time as well. haha (See I don’t have a problem disclosing it, I just don’t supply the information when it’s demanded of me or I don’t see it as necessary. haha)

I should tell them I’ve written in Donald Trump for every election until now, and my prayers have finally been answered. lol

Lol I know, I generally don’t and am not in this case either. I really am the most difficult person to offend or upset. I’m just a little baffled by this person’s sense of entitlement to my voting history.

They inform me more about other stuff I want more than car stuff. I’ve bought my Bluetooth headsets due to deals there along with my “fairy” lights and French press etc. It may not be strictly Jalopnik related but it’s nice and it pays the bills. Plus it is better than a big purple dildo.

Noted, but struggling to keep the lights on seems to be the one constant in journalism, it’s what you do in the face of instability that shows what you really want.

Not that there’s anything ‘wrong’ with pumping out click bait for revenue, but it doesn’t engender reader loyalty either.

I think Gamecat’s “best of Oppo” (where’d that go?) and other automotive sub-blogs could currently give the FP a run for its money all things being equal.
